iPhone Paintbook Tips and Info

Drawing

  • Tap the + icon to add a new page. You can draw on it immediately.
  • You must unlock an old page to draw on it. Tap the Pencil icon to unlock.
  • Use one finger touch to draw.
  • As you draw, the stroke is smoothed and curves are approximated.
  • If the stroke is incorrect, use the undo icon to remove it and try again.
  • If you see that a stroke is going wrong but you haven't yet lifted your finger, tap with another finger to cancel the current stroke and try again.
  • If using transparent medium, drawing speed is somewhat reduced; just draw a little slower.

Moving the Paper

  • Use two fingers to move the paper.
  • The paper follows exactly where you have placed your fingers to rotate and zoom.
  • If troubled by unwanted zooming, put your two fingers farther apart at the beginning; this will cause less zoom as you move.

Colour Palette

  • Tap a colour well (circle of colour) to select and paint with that colour
  • You may touch several colours at the same time to blend them.
  • Tap and hold a well to adjust the colour in that well using the colour adjusters (at the bottom)
  • Stroke your finger across the adjuster to make a change
  • The left adjuster changes colour without changing brightness (value).
  • The right adjuster changes value and colour intensity without changing its overall hue.

Brush Settings

  • Tap a brush pad (bottom of screen) to select and paint with a brush.
  • Brushes remember the last colour used; when using a new brush it will start as black.
  • The current brush is shown highlighted in blue.
  • Use the upper slider to control density from 10% to 100%
  • Density is how much pigment (or ink) is put on the paper with each stroke.
  • Use the lower slider to control brush width from 0.1mm to 100mm wide.
  • Tap the preview pad (top of screen) to change medium from pigment to ink (droplet)
  • Tap the preview pad further to change brush shape from round to square.

Pigment vs. Ink

  • Pigment colours are opaque.
  • Applying more pigment obscures what is under it.
  • White pigment can be used as an "eraser" if needed.
  • Ink colours are transparent.
  • Applying more ink darkens what is under it.
  • White ink is completely transparent.

Browse mode (drawing locked)

  • Swipe on the screen left or right with one finger to flip pages.
  • Tap the book tool to go to the page catalogue.
  • Use two finger pinch/stretch gestures to change zoom/rotation levels.

Saving your Sketches

  • Sketches are saved by pressing the Lock icon, or by exiting the App (e.g. if the phone rings).
  • Currently, the only way to share sketches is by saving a snapshot to your photos folder. This will change in version 2.5.
