The study of human form is central to my practice.

I began modeling with clay as an alternative to drawing in life studio situations. Modeling from the figure helps to improve my understanding of form and works in conjunction with drawing as a means of study. This approach, developed in the Renaissance, has been used by such as Michelangelo, Giamgologna and Degas since.

The pieces in this exhibition are a record of process. They were executed working directly from the model. I try to keep the idea of final product as far away from my mind as possible. The resulting studies are not altered, except to prepare them for firing, after the pose is over.

The immediacy of clay is well suited this activity. The natural push and pull of the material allows for an intimate direct connection with the model, capturing nuance of gesture and expression.
